IMEC

Imec is the world-leading research and innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies. The combination of our widely acclaimed leadership in microchip technology and profound software and ICT expertise is what makes us unique.

By leveraging our world-class infrastructure and local and global ecosystem of partners across a multitude of industries, we create groundbreaking innovation in application domains such as healthcare, smart cities and mobility, logistics and manufacturing, and energy.

On October 1st 2016, imec has merged with the digital research and incubation center iMinds into one high-tech research and innovation hub for nanoelectronics and digital technologies, under the name imec. As a trusted partner for companies, start-ups and universities imec brings together close to 3,500 brilliant minds from over 70 nationalities. imec is headquartered in Leuven, Belgium and also has distributed R&D groups at a number of Flemish universities, in the Netherlands (Holst Centre jointly established with the Dutch research organization TNO), Taiwan, USA (imec Florida), China, and offices in India and Japan.

In 2015, imec's revenue (P&L) totaled 415 million euro (of which a 47.7 million euro grant from the Flemish Government and a 2.75 million euro grant from the Dutch Government) and of iMinds which is integrated in imec as of September 21, 2016 52 million euro. imec as well as iMinds have a solid track record on translating research into technology by a close partnership with both academic partners and industry worldwide using a variety of business models. It offers dedicated regional innovation services and joint industry collaboration (e.g. imec.icon), incubation and venture capital access support (imec.xpand, imec.istart), design and fabrication services (imec.iclink), pilot line production including in-house low-volume production and technology transfer to foundries for larger volumes.

Primary contributors to KardiaTool will be the Life Science Technologies department (LST) and the Center for Electronics Design and Manufacturing (cEDM).

The Life Sciences Technologies (LST) department is the driving force behind the integration of nanoelectronics into life science and diagnostics platforms. It develops instrument platforms around photonic, electrochemical, electrical, and microfluidic sensor components together with expertise on interfacing with biological materials and pharmaceutical and medical application expertise. The department runs its own facilities for molecular biology, human samples, and cell and tissue culturing for experimental characterization and testing of novel platforms. The LST department works closely with other departments on process development, microelectronic design, and system integration.

The mission of the Center for Electronics Design and Manufacturing (cEDM) within imec is to support the development of high quality, reliable and cost-effective electronic modules (PBA) in industry by means of knowledge creation and sharing, scientifically sound methodologies and collaboration throughout the electronic supply chain.
