CSIC

The legal entity is the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), which is the largest public institution dedicated to research in Spain and the third largest in Europe, with a total staff of more than 15000 people.

The project will be performed at two institutes: the Barcelona Microelectronics Institute of the National Microelectronics Center (IMB-CNM) and the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB).

IMB-CNM

IMB-CNMThe main activity of IMB-CNM is basic and applied research and development in micro- and nano-electronics based in silicon technology. Its mission is to improve the knowledge in these fields and to contribute to the implementation of solutions based in these technologies in industrial products.

IMB-CNM was established in 1985 and has a staff of about 200 persons. The integrated micro- and nano-fabrication clean room of IMB-CNM is one of the large-scale scientific and technological facilities (ICTS) in Spain, and it was supported by the EC access to research infrastructures programme from 2000 to 2003. It includes a full CMOS line for integrated circuit fabrication and integrated facilities for silicon micromachining and nanofabrication. Since 1990, IMB-CNM is continuously participating in 15-20 projects of the European Framework Programmes or Joint Technology Initiatives.

ICMAB-CSIC

ICMAB-CSIC (www.icmab.es) is an internationally renowned public research institute in Advanced Functional Materials integrated in the National Research Council of Spain (CSIC). The mission of the ICMAB is to generate new knowledge in Materials Science through excellent scientific research useful for society and industry.

ICMAB has 57 permanent and 90 non-permanent scientists and a total of 220 people divided in eight Research Groups. The center has outstanding international competitiveness, with a large number of high impact articles and citations and European research projects participation (9 ERC grants at present), with the strongest international leadership position in the specific domains of Functional molecular, supramolecular and oxide materials. The center has been recently awarded with the label of Center of Excellence “Severo Ochoa” by the Spanish Ministry.

The Strategic Research Program includes five mission-oriented Research Lines to face three social grand-challenges: clean and secure energy, smart and sustainable electronics and smart nanomedicine. The strategic Research Lines are: 1/ Energy storage and conversion; 2/ Superconductors for power applications; 3/ Oxide electronics; 4/ Molecular electronics; 5/ Multifunctional nanostructured biomaterials.
