UNIPI

The University of Pisa (UNIPI), founded in 1343, is one of the most ancient and prestigious universities in Europe.

Today it is a prestigious modern centre of teaching and advanced research, and it ranks among the top 200 universities in the world according to the most recent Shanghai Ranking ARWU 2015. UNIPI has a rich source of innovation within over 200 labs and 20 departments, which span all areas of science and technology. Since the early 2000s, it started to manage the technology transfer process through a dedicated team composed by experts in intellectual property management and commercialization of research. To date, UNIPI has 42 acknowledged multi-awarded spin-off companies. Technology transfer takes place at UNIPI also through applied-research collaborations with worldwide companies that, in the last year, financed research activities for about 21 million Euros. Finally, it is worth mentioning the PhD program which is the highest level of education in the Italian academic system and provides the skills necessary to carry out high quality research activities at universities and public or private entities. Non-EU Citizens and EU Citizens who meet specific requirements are also welcome in the PhD program. Within the School of Doctorate there is also the PhD+ program, designed and fully developed by UNIPI, aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurial mind-set in Master degree students, PhD students, PhDs and academics. Finally, the vitality and experience of its research personnel allowed the University of Pisa to be involved, as a partner or coordinator, in about 70 research projects in FP7 and many already approved in Horizon2020.

The Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry has considerable experience and widespread competences in many areas of chemistry. Chemical studies at the University of Pisa promote extensive academic and applied research with numerous partnerships within national and EU projects. Research activities cover most of the traditional as well as advanced areas of Chemistry and Materials Science. Amongst the many sectors in which it excels, there are the following: Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Thermodynamics and Thermal Analysis, NMR and Optical Spectroscopies, Organic and Inorganic Synthesis, Biologically Active Compounds, Catalysis, Nano- and bio-materials, Polymer sciences, Sensors, Cultural Heritage, Environment and Health, Clinical Chemistry.

Many research groups at the Department of Chemistry & Industrial Chemistry are involved in the development of analytical procedures and devices for health care and medical monitoring, and take advantage of a large network of collaborations. F.i., it was part of EXPERTISSUES in FP6, a network of excellence for the development of novel therapeutic strategies for tissue engineering, SKIN TREAT, a collaborative project of FP7 aimed at develop and validate nano-chemical and bio-technologies for skin diseases, SWAN-iCare in FP7, an ambitious project aimed at developing an integrated autonomous device for the monitoring of chronic wounds, HEARTEN in Horizon2020, a project aimed at developing a co-operative m-HEALTH environment targeting adherence and management of patients suffering from Heart Failure.
