Prof. Abdelhamid Errachid

He is a Full Professor in Claude Bernard University-Lyon. He has been involved as a principal investigator and team leader in several European Projects under FP6 (DVT-IMP, MAPTech, Nano2Life, Cell-PROM, ARES, VECTOR, SPOT-NOSED), FP7 (SensorART, BOND, SEA-on-a-chip), and H2020 (HEARTEN (Coordinator), MicroMole, DiagCan (coordinator)) as well as NATO (Coordinator), INTAS and TEMPUS International Projects and national Spanish projects (MICROMENCE, MINAHE I, MINAHE II and PETRI). Prof. A. Errachid is a head of the Micro/Nanotechology group, which is one of three groups based in the team SIMS. Papers: 158, Congress: 400, h-index: 23, Patents: 3 (1 PCT), He also authored/contributed to 13 Books.

Dr. Nadia Zine

She is a lecturer at the UCBL. Her research interest is the chemical functionalization and the development of unconventional microtechnologies based on micro-contact printing and soft lithography.

Dr. Monique Sigaud

She is a lecturer at the UCBL/IUT Lyon1. Her expertise is within analytical electrochemistry (conductometry, potentiometry, amperometry and voltammetries).

Florence Lagouanelle

Graduated from a Master Degree in European project management from Université Picardie Jules Verne in 2005, Florence Lagouanelle joined Ayming (formerly Alma CG) in 2007 as European R&D projects manager.In this context, she coordinated a dozen of European collaborative projects under the 6th, 7th and H2020 framework programmes. These were projects with high scientific challenges and involving large-scale partnerships: from 5 to 30 partners for budgets reaching 23 million euros.After 10 years in this consulting company, she joined the Institute of Analytical Sciences in the Micro & Nanobiotechnologies team as a project manager.

Prof. Dimitrios I. Fotiadis

He received the Diploma degree in chemical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Athens, Greece, in 1985, and the Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering and materials science from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1990. He is currently a Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece, where he is also the Director of the Unit of Medical Technology and Intelligent Information Systems, and is also an Affiliated Member of Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas, Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Dept. of Biomedical Research.

He was a Visiting Researcher at the RWTH, Aachen, Germany, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston. He has coordinated and participated in more than 200 R&D funded projects. He is the author or coauthor of more than 220 papers in scientific journals, 400 papers in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and more than 45 chapters in books. He is also the editor or coeditor of 25 books. His work has received more than 8000 citations (h-index = 45).

He is a senior member of IEEE, member of IEEE Technical Committee of information Technology in Healthcare and the Editor in Chief of IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics, receiving editor for the Biomedical Signal Processing and Control Journal and Associate Editor for Computers in Biology and Medicine. His research interests include multiscale modeling of human tissues and organs, intelligent wearable/implantable devices for automated diagnosis, processing of big medical data, sensor informatics, image informatics, and bioinformatics.

Dr. Evanthia Tripoliti

Dr Evanthia E. Tripoliti was born in Chios island, Greece, in 1978. In 2001 she received the Diploma degree from the Department of Computer Science, School of Natural Sciences, University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece.  The title of her thesis was Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine – Development of a Telemedicine Service.  In 2003 she received the M.Sc. degree from the Department of Computer Science, School of Natural Sciences, University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece. Her Master thesis concerned the automated diagnosis and quantification of rheumatoid arthritis using artificial intelligence techniques and MRI data.  In 2012 she received the PhD degree from the Department of Computer Science, School of Natural Sciences, University of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece.  Her Ph.D. thesis focused on the automated analysis of brain function in patients with Alzheimer’s disease based on the Random Forests algorithm.  Her main areas of expertise are biomedical engineering, biomedical signal processing, biomedical image processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning.  She has more than 50 publications in International Journal, Conferences and Book Chapters.  Since 1999, she has been a member of Unit of Medical Technology and Intelligent Information Systems, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Ioannina.

Prof. Yorgos Goletsis

He holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Operations Research. He is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Economics and Scientific Manager of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit of University of Ioannina. He has a long experience from EU projects (under FP7, FP6, IST, LLV, Tacis) both as an expert and as project/scientific manager. He is also external evaluator in EU granted projects. His research interests include data mining, decision support systems, entrepreneurship, innovation, operations research, data analysis. Some recent health related ICT projects he was involved in include project SensorART (FP7), Neomark (FP6), Match (FP6).

Prof. Goletsis’ experience combines ICT, e-health, economics and business development and innovation management. He is responsible for the Scientific Programme of the special action ‘Innovation Odysseys’ aiming at supporting innovative ideas to be commercialised. Innovation Odysseys have been recently chose to represent Greece in the European Enterprise Promotion Awards. He has also been recently nominated to participate in the International Leadership Visitor Programme on Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development by the U.S. Department of State.

Prof. Joan Bausells

He was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1957. He graduated in physics in 1980, M.S. (1982) and Ph.D. (1986) in solid-state physics, University of Barcelona. From 1981 to 1986 he worked as R&D engineer in the semiconductor industry. In 1986 he joined IMB-CNM, where he is a permanent researcher since 1988 and Research Professor since 2002. At IMB-CNM he was manager of the Sensor and Actuator Group (1990-1995), the Microsystems Department (1999-2002) and the Nanotechnology Group (2002-2006). From 2008 to 2012 he was Deputy Director of IMB-CNM, and Acting Director from January to June 2012. He has published more than 100 papers in international journals and more than 230 papers in Conferences. He has participated in 17 projects funded by the EC Framework Programmes in micro- and nano-systems, and has coordinated two of them. His current research interests include micro- and nano-electromechanical structures and nanoelectronic devices, and their applications to silicon micro/nano (sensor)systems.

Prof. Francesc Teixidor

He was born (1952) in Verges, Spain. He graduated in chemistry in 1975, M.S. (1976) and Ph.D. (1979) in Chemistry, University Autonoma of Barcelona (UAB). Postdoc stay (1979-1982) at the University of Michigan (USA). Assistant professor (1982-1987) Chem Dep (UAB). Associate professor at ICMAB-CSIC (1987), Research Professor in 1999. Head of the department of Molecular and Supramolecular Materials at ICMAB. Pioneer of the Euroboron meetings held every three years, chairman of the first Euroboron in Platja d’Aro, Spain. Author of over 300 papers, h=45 (Nov 23, 2016). 14 (EU) and 33 (Spain) projects. Research interests: methods for the derivatization of boron clusters, their interaction with nanoparticles (spions, gold nanoparticles, quantum dots and globular proteins), sensors, reversible electrochemical couples, light harvesting and molecular electronics.

Albert Alcacer

He was born in Barcelona (1989), received his Bachelor degree in Electronics Engineering (2014) at the Polytechnics University of Catalonia and is currently mastering in the Internet of Things for e-Health at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Since 2015, he is member of the Nanofabrication and NEMS group at IMB-CNM, where he is directly working as R&D engineer focused on the design, fabrication and characterization of Kardiatool's ISFET sensors.

Prof. Roger Fuoco

He is a full professor in Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa since 1994. He has been the co-ordinator of many research projects funded by several public and private agencies on the development of combined instrumentation and innovative analytical methodologies for the chemical characterization of complex environmental and biological systems. Moreover, in collaboration with the Institute of Clinical Physiology (CNR, Pisa) and some university clinics, he has contributed to the start of a research project on the chemical characterization of non-traditional body fluids (breath, sweat, saliva) for the monitoring of therapies and medical diagnosis. Prof. Fuoco is currently the Director of the Dept. Chem. & Ind. Chem (Univ. Pisa, Italy). He is the author of more than 100 scientific publications.

Dr. Fabio Di Francesco

He is researcher at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa. He Has been involved in researches concerning multi-sensor systems for environmental, food biomedical applications. His current research activity aims at the development of diagnostic and patient monitoring tools for identification of chemical markers in body fluids (breath, sweat, saliva, etc.). In the sensor field, he has participated to several EU projects. At present, he leads one of the operating units involved in SWAN-iCare, (http://www.swan-icare.eu/). He has authored 30 papers on international peer-reviewed journals, 3 book chapters, 70 contributions to congresses, 4 patents.

Dr. Silvia Ghimenti

She has been working as a technician at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa since September 2015. Her research interests are mainly related to the development of new analytical methodologies based on liquid and/or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for the determination of several chemical species in body fluids (breath, saliva, sweat and blood) for the non-invasive monitoring of metabolic disorders and therapeutic treatments to find a correlation between specific markers and pathologies/therapies considered. She is author of 30 papers on international peer-reviewed journals and more than 50 contributions to national and international congresses. She contributed to the activities of HEARTEN (http://www.hearten.eu/, GA N° 643694) project, and is currently involved in POTION (https://potionh2020.com/, GA N° 824153) project.

Dr. Tommaso Lomonaco

He is a researcher in Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa. His research activity aims at identifying chemical markers in body fluids (breath, sweat, saliva and dried blood spot) by means of LC-MS and GC-MS with the aim to develop innovative diagnostic and patient monitoring tools. He has authored 28 papers on international peer-reviewed journals and more than 50 contributions to national and international congresses. He contributed to the activities of HEARTEN (http://www.hearten.eu/, GA N° 643694) project, and is currently involved in POTION (https://potionh2020.com/, GA N° 824153) project."

 

FRAUNHOFER

Matthias Struck

He studied computer science with focus on medical informatics. He is working at Fraunhofer IIS since 2006. He was involved in various software development projects focussing on standardized medical data communication, physiological signal monitoring and algorithm development. In 2011, he became group manager and is now coordinating several national and European research projects. Main activities are in the development of biosignal processing algorithms, developing of transfer functions, sensor data fusion, and telemedical applications. Analyzing of sweat for training performance is one of the key challenges in the Leistungszentrum Elektroniksysteme (LZE), which is a joint initiative of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Fraunhofer IIS, Fraunhofer IISB, and Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), in addition to other non-university research institutes and various industry partners. In April 2016 Matthias Struck also became deputy head of the department of »Image Processing and Medical Engineering«.

Christian Hofmann

He studied Electrical Engineering at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen. Since 2005 he is working at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen as scientific employee in the Department for “Image Processing and Medical Engineering”. His activities cover medical sensor design, embedded systems programming, digital biosignal processing and short-range wireless data communication such as Bluetooth and ZigBee. In addition to the technical operation he is involved into project management for several research and development projects on national end European level as well as into assistance to industrial customers. In 2008, Christian Hofmann became Group Manager of the research team “Medical Sensor Systems”.

Norman Pfeiffer

He received his Bachelor in Medical Engineering at the University of Applied Science Jena and his Master in Medical Engineering Science at the University of Luebeck. He is a member of the scientific staff of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen since 2015. He is part of the research team "Medical Sensor Systems”. His work focuses on sensor design for electrophysiological signals, development of analog front ends, digital signal processing and project management.

BIOTRAY

Djamel Bouraya

He received his engineer’s degree in physics and material sciences from ECAM engineering school in 1992; he was design engineer in CNRS for 11 years and he has been involved in development of systems and instrument for the past 24 years. In 2005 he created BioTray to develop instruments using microtechology for life sciences applications. In addition to developing his company, his main research interests are development of instruments in molecular diagnostic, microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip technology for medical research and diagnostic.

MICRONIT

Dr. Monica Brivio

Dr. Brivio is currently leading the Strategic R&D department at Micronit, which aims at extending Micronit’s capabilities through the development of new technologies and functionalities. Dr. Brivio joined Micronit Microfluidics in 2012 where she first worked as a Project manager and carried out both project management and new business development activities within the (point-of-care) diagnostic sector. As a former Assistant Professor at the Technical University of Denmark and a former leading researcher at both Uppsala University (Uppsala, Sweden) and the Science for Life Laboratory (Stockholm, Sweden), Dr. Brivio has gained more than fifteen years of experience in the field of lab-on-a-chip technologies and microfluidics for application in chemistry and life science with focus on cross-disciplinary research in the areas of microfluidics and molecular diagnostics and immunochemistry. Dr. Brivio has extensive experience in managing collaborative projects both at an international (e.g., EU and IMI projects) and at a national level with various sized consortia. Over the years she has established a considerably large network of contacts both within Academia and Industry and she has built a strong background in applying microfluidics-based technologies to life science applications.

Dr. Elwin Vrouwe

Dr. Vrouwe is a senior R&D scientist and has been working on a multitude of applications for microfluidic devices for over fifteen years, combining microfluidics, chemistry and electronics. He has worked on several FP6 and FP7 projects and currently supervises an ER and ESR working on two FP7-PEOPLE-ITN projects.

Prof. Lampros Michalis

MD, PhD, FRCP, FESC, is Professor of Cardiology in the Faculty of Medicine, School of health Sciences, University of Ioannina, Greece and Director of the 2nd Department of Cardiology, University Hospital of Ioannina. He graduated with distinction from the Medical School, University of Athens, Greece in 1984. In 1989 he was awarded with Distinction for his MD Thesis from Athens Medical School, Greece. In 1992 he became Member of the Royal College of Physicians, UK, while in 2017 he was awarded the honorary title of Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He did his whole training in Cardiology in the UK and worked as a Lecturer in the School of Post Graduate Medicine of Keele University, UK, from September 1993 until May 1995. He started his academic career in the Medical School, University of Ioannina, Greece in May 1995 and has been a Professor of Cardiology since May 2005. His interests focus on: (a) Coronary Artery Disease, Interventional Cardiology, Invasive Imaging and Invasive Management of Valvular Heart Disease and Heart Failure; (b) Bioengineering research projects, focusing on the development of software for the assessment of long duration ECG signals for the diagnosis of ischaemia and arrhythmias and hybrid imaging techniques of the coronary and peripheral arteries; and (c) the association of blood flow with the development and progress of atherosclerosis. He has published >230 papers with >6,500 citations, while he has edited four books. He has been an invited speaker in many national and international congresses and a reviewer in >20 international peer review journals. 

Prof. Katerina Naka

MD, PhD, FESC, graduated with distinction from the University of Ioannina Medical School, Ioannina, Greece in 1994. In 2003 she received the PhD degree in Cardiology from the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff, Wales, UK on the effects of acute physical exercise on large arterial mechanics in healthy subjects and heart failure. She was fully trained in Cardiology in the University Hospital of Ioannina. She has been working as an academic cardiologist in the Second Department of Cardiology, Faculty of Medicine, School of Health sciences, University of Ioannina since 2006 and has been an Associate Professor of Cardiology since January 2017. She is Head of the Heart Failure Unit that she initiated in the University Hospital of Ioannina (Director: Professor LK Michalis). She has been heavily involved in pre- and post-graduate cardiology education at a local and national level and with the European Society of Cardiology. She has published over 120 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has over 100 presentations in various national and international medical congresses with >3,500 citations and an h-index of 32 at present. Her research interests focus on: heart failure, non-invasive and invasive cardiovascular imaging, atherosclerosis, peripheral circulation and cardiovascular prevention, machine-learning and biomedical engineering. She has organized an experimental echocardiographic laboratory where experimental studies in heart failure in animals were performed. She has been a principal investigator in randomized controlled trials and registries actively enrolling patients with heart failure in her Department.

Dr. Aris Bechlioulis

MD, PhD, received his Medical Diploma in 2003 and his PhD degree in Cardiology in 2011 from the Medical School of University of Ioannina. His main clinical interests are the management of patients with heart failure and implantation of rhythm devices. He works currently as an attending physician in the 2nd Department of Cardiology of the University of Ioannina and is a member of the Heart Failure Unit team of the 2nd Department of Cardiology of the University of Ioannina. He has published over 40 papers in various peer-reviewed journals and has over 60 presentations in various national and international medical congresses. He participated in the project “NOESIS: Platform for wide scale integration and visual representation of medical intelligence. IST-2002-507960 (www.noesis-eu.org)”, from September 2005 – May 2007 as well as the HORIZON 2020 project HEARTEN: A co-operative mHEALTH environment targeting adherence and management of patients suffering from Heart Failure – grant n° 643694 (www.hearten.eu). He currently participates in several randomized controlled trials and registries in patients with heart failure

Jean-Christophe Lourme

He is ValoTec CEO and responsible of the research. He studied Electrical Engineering at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan in France. After 3 years as Professor at the University (embedded system and IT), he joined IBM France (high technology project) and was project manager in high technology missions. In 2007, Jean-Christophe joined ValoTec. He is also Expert for ANR (French National Research Agency). At ValoTec Jean-Christophe is head of the research. Jean-Christophe had worked on numerous medical devices products as diagnostic devices and monitoring products.

Dominique Pacitto

Dominique Pacitto joined ValoTec in 2007 as R&D Engineer after an engineering degree. At ValoTec, Dominique Pacitto works on various projects related to medical devices (skin treatment, medical device) and on diagnostic devices (micro-fluidic cells incubator, Point of Care using electromagnetic wave). Dominique Pacitto is also an expert on medical electrical equipment standards (IEC60601, IEC61010, IEC62304, ISO14971).

Xavier Canoniga

Xavier joined ValoTec as an industrial designer in 2017 and received his product design diploma in Paris in 2018. He works on various projects related to medical devices (measuring and analysis devices) mainly on aspects of use and aesthetics to make them efficient, appealing and user-friendly.

Lorris Lumineau-Marsaudon

After an engineering diploma by apprenticeship in an automotive company, Lorris decided follow an Innovation and Design cursus in Paris, to complete his formation. Lorris joined ValoTec in 2016 to reinforce the Mechanic and Design department. Lorris works on the mechanical aspects of the projects (electronic integration, industrialization, regulatory compliance…).

Pietro Salvo

Researcher, received the M.Sc. degree in Electronics Engineering and the Ph.D. degree in Automation, Robotics and Bioengineering from University of Pisa, Italy, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. He was a research associate at the Institute for the Conservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage, National Council of Research, Florence, Italy, from 2008 until 2009. In 2009-2013, he was at the Centre for Microsystems Technology (CMST), Ghent University, Belgium, where he was responsible of the development of sensors, electronic devices and microfluidic systems for bioengineering platforms. From 2013 to 2016, he was at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, University of Pisa, Italy, where he worked on sensors and biosensors for the monitoring of human fluids and physiological parameters. Presently, he is at the Institute of Clinical Physiology, National Council of Research (CNR IFC), Pisa (Italy), where he is currently working on bioengineering applications such as a human breath sampling system, sensors for monitoring physiological parameters and food quality, and wearable sensors for wound monitoring. His scientific areas of interest include sensors and biosensors, non-invasive or minimal invasive monitoring tools, wireless sensors networks, smart materials and nanomaterials, hybrid systems, data analysis and signal processing.

Michela Rial

Researcher. Head of the Grant Office of CNR IFC, research adviser and senior project manager, she has an extensive knowledge and expertise in the management and controlling of EU-funded projects. ENACHIP

Trifon Liakopoulos

Ph.D, (EnaChip President, CEO and founder) is a recognized MEMS/Wafer Level Magnetics industry pioneer and an award winning product innovator (EL711, 2013). Prior founding EnaChip and in addition to his experience with large corporations such as Bell Labs and Altera, Trifon co-founded Enpirion (acquired by Altera now Intel) a world leader in power integration as a spinout from Bell Labs to successfully commercialize the world’s first Power System on Chip (PwrSoC) products for consumer markets. He led the development efforts of magnetic MEMS technology, set up wafer process prototype labs and established a technology platform for PowrSoC device manufacturing. Trifon was responsible for all aspects of product development and commercialization including design, product manufacturing and cost analysis and he managed the supply chain and all outsourced activities including all foundry partnerships and relationships. Currently, he is focusing growing Enachip as a unique world leading company offering integrated magnetic technologies and solutions for PwrSoC and medical device industries by leveraging cutting edge proprietary MEMS and nano-technology materials and processes. He has several publications and holds 19 patents.

Mark Allen

Ph.D, (Scientific Advisor & founder of EnaChip, and Scientific Director, Singh Center for Nanotechnology, Alfred Fitler Moore Professor, Electrical and Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, University of Pennsylvania). Combining insights from the worlds of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry and materials science, Allen is a pioneer in the field of micro-electromechanical systems, or MEMS, and nanofabrication technology. Mark’s research allows the creation of structures, sensors and actuators that exploit the unique potential of the small scale. For example, such miniscule devices can sit at the intersection of the biological and the digital, sensing the physical and electrical signals found in the heart and in the brain and transmitting them to computers for processing. Mark has successfully launched several startup companies including CardioMEMS (acquired by St. Jude Medical) a medical device company that has developed and commercialized a proprietary wireless sensing and communication technology for the human body. Its FDA approved technology platform is designed to improve the management of severe chronic cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and aneurysms. Their miniature wireless sensors can be implanted using minimally invasive techniques and transmit cardiac output, blood pressure and heart rate data that are critical to the management of patients. Mark has published approximately 120 journal articles and holds approximately 40 patents.

UNISU

Professor Heather Gage

She is Director of the Surrey Health Economics Centre where she currently manages an ongoing portfolio of over 20 collaborative research projects funded by the British NIHR, European Commission, industry and the voluntary sector. Heather’s research interests encompass many aspects of health service delivery, but particularly focus on evaluative studies and outcomes measurement. Recent work has been published in a range of health, clinical and medical journals. Heather is a research adviser, and leads on health economics, for the NIHR Research Design Service in South East England. Heather has held visiting positions at the Boston University School of Public Health and the Center for Health Quality, Outcomes and Economic Research of the US Veterans Healthcare Administration.

Dr Daniel Jackson

Senior Research Fellow: Daniel is a graduate of the MSc Health Economics program at the University of York, with over 15 years of experience in health economics and outcomes research, both for industry and academia. Daniel has worked closely with the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in the UK since its inception, and has also been involved with the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC), both in demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of an intervention, but also in developing and analysing patient reported outcomes. He has extensive experience in reviewing and developing economic models in many healthcare settings, and in conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses. He has served as the Health Economics member of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) for the UK. He is an elected fellow of the Royal College of Medicine, the Royal Society of Public Health, and the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Daniel is the author of an acclaimed text in health economics.

Dr Wei Yang

Assistant Professor in Health Economics. Wei Yang is a health economist with an interest in health and long-term care (LTC) research. Her previous work focuses on measuring the impacts of social health insurance on inequities in access to care and fairness in financing, and on identifying factors that drive inequities using longitudinal survey datasets. She has published widely in journals such as Social Science and Medicine, European Journal of Health Economics, Health Policy and Planning, and Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy. She is a member of the editorial board of Global Health Research and Policy.

UCD

Dr Joseph Gallagher

BA, MB, BCh, BAO, MRCPI, MICGP, is a primary care physician and is a clinical lecturer in medicine in UCD, and an honorary lecturer in primary care and public health in Imperial College London and adjunct senior lecturer in health information systems in UCC. He is former primary care lead in the national heart failure programme in Ireland which was involved in redesigning chronic disease care in Ireland. He is a member of the Irish Heart Foundation Council on Heart Failure, Irish College of General Practitioners and Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. He is an invited reviewer for a number of international medical journals. He is a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association and a member of its Patient Care Committee.

Dr Chris Watson

B.Sc. Hons, Ph.D., is a lecturer and the Principal Investigator of the Experimental & Clinical Cardiology Group. The focus of this research group includes in vitro and in vivo models of hypertensive heart disease, diabetes and heart failure to investigate the impact of novel therapies. These activities also include research programmes to identify novel biomarkers that could be used to risk stratify heart failure patients and predict future development of cardiovascular disease complications in patients with heart failure risk-factors. Dr Watson is a co-founder and co-Director along with Dr Gallagher for the UCD Health Research group which is a multidisciplinary group of researchers seeking innovative methods of managing illness, particularly in low and middle income countries using emerging strategies of biomarker science, mHealth and health care system reform. Dr Watson is also a co-PI for the Chronic Cardiovascular Disease Management group, which recently published the STOP-HF trial highlighting the utility of natriuretic peptides to identify patients as a risk stratifying tool for cardiovascular disease complications. This study has now expanded to focus on a Diabetic population within the community. Dr Watson is also the Translational Research coordinator for the Heartbeat Trust. Dr Watson is also actively involved in 2 on-going FP7 projects focused on the development and validation of novel diagnostic biomarkers for heart failure and also investigating biomarker directed therapeutic approaches to prevent cardiac dysfunction. Dr Watson is also involved in a number of innovation and commercialization activities around novel diagnostic biomarkers for disease and novel therapeutic strategies.

Prof Mark Ledwidge

BSc (Pharm), PhD, DBS (Strategy), MPSI, MRPharmsS Prof Ledwidge is a clinical pharmacist and research director of the Heart Failure Unit in the St Vincents University Hospital Group. He holds directorships in six healthcare related companies and has over 70 publications relating to heart failure.

Prof Ken McDonald

MD FRCPI, he is a consultant cardiologist in the St Vincents University Hospital Group and a heart failure specialist. He co-founded the Heartbeat Trust Limited with Prof Ledwidge and together they co-ordinate a team of over 20 clinical, office-based and laboratory-based researchers. The Trust focuses on heart failure, cardiovascular fibrosis, diagnostics, telemonitoring and heart failure prevention, and diabetes. In conjunction with this they also co-founded the Heart Failure Unit at St Vincent’s University Hospital. Prof McDonald is immediate past president of the Irish Cardiac Society and has over 160 peer reviewed publications.
